Naming the BYU Medical School

The Church announced yesterday that BYU will be adding a medical school. I have some suggestions for what it could be named and different medical areas it could emphasize. Please feel free to add yours in the comments.

  • The Neil L. Andersen OB/GYN Training and Fertility Research Institute (and Medical School)
  • The John Taylor Center for Research on Preventing Injury Using Ordinary Household Objects
  • The Ronald A. Rasband Center for Discovering Doctrinal Drugs of Divine Design
  • The Dallin H. Oaks Medical School and Conversion Therapy Research Center
  • The Brigham Young School of Digestive Health
  • The David A. Bednar School for Hospice Care of People Having Faith Not to Be Healed
  • The Joseph Fielding Smith Clearinghouse of Answers to Medical Questions
  • The Dieter F. Uchdorf Healthy Sleep Research Center
  • The Jeffrey R. Holland Musket Wound Treatment (and Infliction) Center
  • The Gary E. Stevenson Medical School (brought to you by ICON Health & Fitness)
  • The Joseph F. Smith Believing Blood Research Center (and Blood Bank)
  • The Neal A. Maxwell School of Supernal Surgery

  1. I’m sure they’ll name it after Martha Hughes Cannon! She was the first physician-in-residence at Deseret Hospital and her later tenure in the state legislature focused on public health. I’m sure she’s one of their top considerations lol

  2. Most likely after Russel Nelson. Personally, I think it should be after Martha Cannon or practically any woman, even one of the nurse/midwives on the handcart companies. There are already plenty of buildings named after men and many of the pioneer women were nurses or midwives or even doctors because back then it was a women’s profession.

One of my ancestors was infamous as the nurse midwife of a handcart company for ordering the women to shorten their skirts. The long dresses would drag in the alkaline desert soil, mineral would build up on the hem, then rub on the women’s ankles, rubbing them raw. Rather than have women with raw ankles, getting scabbed over and infected from the dirt and animal droppings, she ordered the women’s skirts shortened to knee length. The men were scandalized. This is according to a story my dad told of his great grandmother, but whether or not you will find it in the journal of her husband or not….the church has that journal and it is the most used by the YM/YW trek reinactments. Which telling that kind of defeats my not naming her, because lots of people will recognize that journal.

And lest anyone think I am bragging on the faith my pioneer ancestors, many from that handcart company left the church including many in my family because of the very unprophetic stupid advice from church leaders to leave so late in the year. That handcart company ran into snow and had more deaths than all the wagon trains and handcart companies before it added together, and there were still two more handcart companies coming after them. And ya’ll know about the Martin and Willie.

  3. Great story, Anna. Thanks for sharing it!

And yeah, it seems pretty sure that the school will be named after RMN. I left him off my list of suggestions deliberately.

  4. The Holy Medical School after the Order of the Son of God (Melchizedek Med for short)
Medical Office of Russell MariOn Nelson (M.O.R.M.O.N.)
The Hugh B. Brown Amputation Center (We love our patients enough to cut them down!)

  5. Ha! That’s an excellent point, Lisa! It would be the biggest slap in the face to RMN if he set things up so perfectly to have it be named after him, and then Dallin H. Oaks or whoever decided that it would be disrespectful not to name it after Jesus!

  6. Sorry to be the party pooper, but BYU doesn’t name buildings after people anymore. It’ll just be the BYU College of Medicine. Bo-ring!

  7. Pontius, the administration has said repeatedly in the past that there would not be a medical school at BYU, so I think we can safely ignore any current or past policies. Also, I’d imagine that naming a school of medicine isn’t governed by the same rules as buildings. I fear the worst (RMN School of Medicine).

  8. The Canadian School of Medicine.
The Maple Leaf School of Medicine.
    Maple Syrup Medical.
The Oot and Aboot School for Doctoring
    Sorry, Its A Medical School.
Can a noble amazing doctor attend (CANADA for short)

Canada sends all its tithing as a donation to BYU. Canada should have a building name.
