At the Sunstone Symposium this year, Todd Compton, Harold Peterson, and Clair Von Barrus are giving a presentation titled “The Beatles, Rock ‘n’ Roll, and Mormonism.” (Follow the link in the image on the right for more information or to register for Sunstone. If you do, just know that I’ll be jealous!)
Inspired by their topic, I thought it might be fun to imagine what a few of their song lyrics might have been if they had been Mormons. Here are three of my attempts. If you feel so inclined, please feel free to add yours in the comments.
Here Comes the Son
Here comes the Son, here comes the Son
And I say He’s the light.
True disciple, it’s been so many dispensations
True disciple, it’s been so long since Fall and Flood.
Here comes the Son, here comes the Son
And I say He’s the light.
True disciple, the hope returning for Atonement
True disciple, He is the one who’ll shed His blood.
Here comes the Son, here comes the Son
And I say He’s the light.
Son, Son, Son, here He comes!
Son, Son, Son, here He comes!
Son, Son, Son, here He comes!
Son, Son, Son, here He comes!
Son, Son, Son, here He comes!
True disciple, it feels like Jesus is arriving
True disciple, He’ll be the one to clear the FUD.
Here comes the Son, here comes the Son
And I say He’s the light.
Here comes the Son, here comes the Son
And I say He’s the light.
The Plates in the Hill
Year after year, alone in a hill
The sword and the golden plates are keeping perfectly still.
Left where Moroni buried them
Now nobody knows that they’re there
And nobody comes a digging
But the plates in the hill
Have a story to share
And they want to be free
To be shared everywhere.
Well on the way, head in a hat
The man of a thousand visions in his true habitat.
Then he has another vision
Four times this new vision appears
Four years he returns to the hill
But the plates in the hill
Have a story to share
And they want to be free
To be shared everywhere.
The man finally comes digging
He unearths the plates and the sword
The plates he begins to translate
And the plates in the hill
Have a story to share
And they want to be free
To be shared everywhere.
He hardly ever reads them
Sticks with his rock and hat
They don’t like him
And the plates in the hill
Have a story to share
Even though they’re now free
They still feel no one cares.
The Strait and Narrow Path
The strait and narrow path, that leads, to your tree
Will never disappear, I’ve seen that path before
It always leads me here, lead me to your tree
The dark and dreary waste, I traversed, and I trod
Has left a pool of tears, crying for the flawed
Why leave me standing here, show me the iron rod.
I’ve been in the building great, the building spacious too
I’ve only ever had one goal, to make it back to you
And still you lead me back, to the strait and narrow path
You sent me to this field a long long time ago
Don’t leave me waiting here, lead me to your tree.
And still you lead me back, to the strait and narrow path
You sent me to this field a long long time ago
Don’t leave me waiting here, lead me to your tree.
This one doesn’t require much tweaking:
“You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away”
Here I stand head in hand
Turn my face to the wall
If he’s gone I can’t go on
Feeling two foot small
Everywhere people stare
Each and every day
I can see them laugh at me
And I hear them say
Gay? You’ve got to hide your love away
Gay? You’ve got to hide your love away
How can I even try?
I can never win
Hearing them, seeing them
In the state I’m in
How could he say to me
“Love will find a way?”
Gather here all you queers
Let me hear you say
Gay? You’ve got to hide your love away
Gay? You’ve got to hide your love away
Wow, MTodd, that’s great. And super sad. But spot on.
Oh yeah, I’ll tell you something
I think you’ll understand
When I’ll say that something
I want to live in Kolob
I want to live in Kolob
I want to live in Kolob
Oh please, say to me
I’ve been a good child of God
And please, say to me
I’m going to live in Kolob
I want to live with God
I want to live in Kolob
And when I serve you I feel happy inside
It’s such a feeling that my love
I can’t hide
I can’t hide
I can’t hide
Yeah, you got that something
It’s called the atonement
When I’ll say that something
And make a covenant
I want to hold your hand
I want to hold your hand
That’s great, Fix LDS hymns!
It’s not the Beatles, but could definitely work in a Mormon context. Think Joseph to Fanny, or Joseph to Helen, or Joseph to…you get the picture.
Neil Diamond – Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon
Love you so much, can’t count all the ways
I’d die for you girl, and all they can say is
“He’s not your kind”
They never get tired of puttin’ me down
And I never know when I come around
What I’m gonna find
Don’t let them make up your mind
Don’t you know
Girl, you’ll be a woman soon
Please come take my hand
Girl, you’ll be a woman soon
Soon you’ll need a man
I’ve been misunderstood for all of my life
But what they’re sayin’, girl, just cuts like a knife
“The boy’s no good”
Well, I finally found what I’ve been looking for
But if they get the chance, they’ll end it for sure
Sure they would
Baby, I’ve done all I could
It’s up to you
Girl, you’ll be a woman soon
Please come take my hand
Girl, you’ll be a woman soon
Soon you’ll need a man
