A Random Survey

Seeing as how our blog has been a bit quiet lately, I thought it would be fun to take a break from our usual discussion of topics like angel mothers and soteriology, and do a completely random survey. All are invited to participate and share their answers to the following deeply profound questions:

1. Do you use a laptop or a desktop computer?

2. What’s your usual bedtime?

3. What’s your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?

4. Are you right or left-handed?

5. What’s your favorite number?

6. What was the last movie you saw?

7. If you had the chance to visit any place in the world, where would you go?

8. What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?

9. Which Star Wars character is your favorite?

Although on the Starwars Personality Test I was rated most like Princess Leia. Leia is an idealist and diplomat. She’s a person who can easily navigate through the world of communal values and human potentialities, using common ground to create a solid foundation upon which strong relationships can be built. Leia is grounded, empathic, and well-prepared. Princess Leia is a catalyst for real, meaningful change in the world.
    hahahahaha.

    Princess Leia

  19. Kaimi, I always thought that sticking zero in there was a little arbitrary, which I why I write it like I did. I think Euler himself (though I could be wrong) wrote it my way.

For the trip to Pana, it’s going to be Kyya and I. We’ve invited Jorge because he will just have finished his masters then and we should celebrate that, but unfortunately, he probably won’t be able to come. Too bad neither Kyya nor I can speak Spanish. (I can get us by in restaurants, but that’s about it.) Lake Atitlan is the most gorgeous place on planet Earth that I have ever visited, so far. Have you been?

  20. Kaimi, from my experience I’m more familiar with how Tatiana expressed e^(i*pi)–actually I’ve never seen it with the superfluous zero. I deal with imaginary numbers everyday. No, I’m not an accountant I’m an engineer.

  21. Re Euler’s itentity, I’ve seen it both ways. Tatiana’s way when it’s acutally going to be used, and Kaimi’s way when discussing how very cool it is.
    On to the questions

    1. Computer? Desktop (it’s a mac mini, which is just a laptop in desktop form)
    2. Bedtime? 10pm
    3. Breakfast? Normally I eat cold cereal, but my favorite breakfast is fresh breads or pastries (doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, danishes etc.)
    4. Are you right or left-handed? Right handed.
    5. What’s your favorite number? Numbers are like my children. I love them all.
    6. Movie? In the theatres: Dreamgirls. At home: The Wrong Trousers.
    7. If you had the chance to visit any place in the world, where would you go? Italy
    8. Ice cream? Brownie Batter
    9. Star Wars character? Yoda

  22. 1. Laptop

    2. Between 10 and 1 (but I don’t fall asleep until between 12 and 2 or 3)

    3. Well, I’d like to have milk and juice and scrambled eggs and bacon, but allergies mean I have to have something like soymilk and toast or shredded wheat.

    4. Right

    5. 14

    6. In the theaters – Mr. & Mrs. Smith. On DVD – The House of Flying Daggers.

    7. Paris. (I was a French major and I’ve never been.)

    8. Licorice or pistachio.

    9. Han Solo, I guess. (I’m not a huge Star Wars fan.)

  23. I copied Starfoxy’s format:

    1. Computer? Both. I’m an IT geek. I go back and forth between a MacBook Pro and a WinXP desktop.
    2. Bedtime? When blogging, well after midnight. If I skip blogging, 11ish.
    3. Breakfast? Grape Nuts. Or leftover birthday cake with cold milk poured over it.
    4. Handedness? Right handed.
    5. Number? 13, because it scares so many people.
    6. Movie? Pan’s Labyrinth.
    7. Visit? Japan (to visit all my relatives on my mom’s side).
    8. Ice cream? Cake Batter! Or Spumoni.
    9. Star Wars? Jar Jar…just kidding! Stop throwing things at me! Darth Vader in episodes IV and V.

  24. 1.Computer? Both. If my baby tips over the tower, I switch to the laptop, right next to it.
    2. Bedtime? 10:30ish.
    3. Breakfast? eggs benedict, or homemade egg mcmuffin.
    4. Handedness? left handed.
    5. Number? 10
    6. Movie? Telladaga Nights
    7. Visit? Hawaii (everyone in my family has gone except me)
    8. Ice cream? Cake Batter (made with Vanilla ice cream and real cake mix in my kitchenaid)
    9. Star Wars? I don’t have a favorite, but I really hate Natalie Portman as Padmae (sp?)

  25. 1. Do you use a laptop or a desktop computer?

    Laptop.

    2. What’s your usual bedtime?

Oh, I can’t make myself admit, in public, the terrible hours I keep. Basically, just think of the counsel in the D&C about retiring early and rising early–I’m the opposite.

    3. What’s your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?

Depends. I usually eat cold cereal or oatmeal during the week, but on weekends I like decadent things like homemade waffles with strawberries.

    4. Are you right or left-handed?

    Left.

    5. What’s your favorite number?

Some strange people in my family seem to think it’s important to have a favorite number, but unlike Starfoxy, I’ve never managed to muster such affection for digits.

    6. What was the last movie you saw?

Little Miss Sunshine. I loved it.

    7. If you had the chance to visit any place in the world, where would you go?

Ohhh…hard call. I would have to choose among Alaska, the Galapagos, and Greece.

    8. What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?

Like Mark IV, I like vanilla or vanilla-based IC because of the possibilities it offers.

    9. Which Star Wars character is your favorite?

Like Katya, I’m not a huge Star Wars fan…Hans Solo, maybe?

  26. I’m feeling a bit concerned by some of the responses here which seem to indicate a lack of devotion to Star Wars. Janet, Katya, Eve–how would you feel about having two representatives come by to share a life-changing message?

  27. Eve- that’s nothing. My husband loves numbers way more than I do. In fact he asked to know what other people said were their favorite numbers. When I told him Tatiana’s (1729) he told me the story behind it off the top of his head. I got her other numbers, but not that one.

  28. Thanks for responding, everyone; it’s fun to get to know you all a little better.

    My own answers:

    1. Do you use a laptop or a desktop computer?

Laptop. I’ve never actually owned a desktop, despite the fact that you can get cooler features for less money; I like my computer to be portable.

    2. What’s your usual bedtime?

I’m currently working to get it back to between midnight and 1:00.

    3. What’s your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?

I’m actually not much of a breakfast-eater. I really like breakfast foods, but I like them for dinner.

    4. Are you right or left-handed?

    Left.

    5. What’s your favorite number?

Nine. (Thus the number of questions on this survey.)

    6. What was the last movie you saw?

I’m actually not sure; it’s been a while since I watched a movie. The last DVD I watched, though, contained episodes of Buffy.

    7. If you had the chance to visit any place in the world, where would you go?

    I’d love to tour Europe.

    8. What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?

Either mint chocolate chip or chocolate chip cookie dough. For a long time I rejected most ice cream out of hand that didn’t have a chocolate base, but lately I’m finding that vanilla-based ice creams aren’t necessarily bad (especially if you put chocolate on top).

    9. Which Star Wars character is your favorite?

In the prequels, Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan. I’m also quite fond of Tion Medon, for reasons I can’t really explain.

In the originals, I’m not sure I can pick–Luke, Leia, Han, and Yoda would all be contenders.

  29. 1. Laptop

    2. Usual bedtime: I don’t keep enough of a routine to have a “usual” bedtime. I’m guessing I average midnight-ish.

    3. Favorite thing to eat for breakfast: oh, this is too difficult. Here is a non-inclusive list of breakfast foods I like:

    muesli with yogurt
    granola
good cold cereal (such as Trader Joe’s Very Berry Clusters)
warm cinnamon rolls and hot cocoa
    some bread product with Nutella
    homemade coffee cake
scrambled eggs (the way my grandma made them) and toast and jam
oatmeal with raisins or with brown sugar

    4. Right-handed

    5. Favorite number: Pi, I think, but there are so many cool numbers! Once I was teaching a RS lesson and passed out quotes for people to read, but instead of numbering the quotes sequentially like a normal person I assigned the quotes some of my favorite numbers. “Could whoever has the ‘square root of two’ quote read, please?” It was awesome.

    6. Last movie watched: Casque d’Or, a French gangster movie made in the 1950s. Do I get a prize for obscurity?

    7. Place to visit: New Zealand

    8. Ice cream flavor: Moose tracks

    9. Star Wars character: Han Solo

  30. 1. Laptop
    2. 12:30am

    8. Mint chocolate chip
    9. Yoda (the puppet, not the CGI thing)

  31. I’m feeling a bit concerned by some of the responses here which seem to indicate a lack of devotion to Star Wars. Janet, Katya, Eve, how would you feel about having two representatives come by to share a life-changing message?

I’ll be happy to let a pair of Jedi knights into my house to share a message with me and my family on two conditions: (a) that they read, ponder, and pray about Lynnette’s fine post on LDS theologies of religion and exhibit appropriate pluralistic respect for my religious peculiarities and (b) that they leave the Geiger counter to measure my mito-whatsamacallits at home. 😀

  32. 1. Do you use a laptop or a desktop computer?
Laptop at home and a university-owned desktop in my office

    8. What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?
    vanilla frozen yogurt
    9. Which Star Wars character is your favorite?
    Obi-Wan

  33. I must say, I’ve found this thread very educational; thus far it’s led to me to google the terms Lindisfarne, Ayers Rock, Spumoni, and Euler’s identity.

    7. Right this second….Scotland. Near the sea. In the rain.

    8. Phish Food

    9. Han Solo!

  35. Emily, hmmm–I’m left-handed but right-footed. I wonder how common this kind of crossedness is.

(And I experience the same deep divide between the theory and the practice of bedtime. Sigh.)

  36. I’m feeling a bit concerned by some of the responses here which seem to indicate a lack of devotion to Star Wars. Janet, Katya, Eve, how would you feel about having two representatives come by to share a life-changing message?

Lynnette, I’m not sure that is a good idea. While it is true that a man or woman cannot be saved in ignorance, we need to be cautious. Pearls before swine, and all that. Those who were less than valiant in the premortal life probably need milk before meat. But we should not lose hope, in the next life the scales might fall from their eyes and they will embrace the Wookie. For now, let’s just love them anyway.

    5. I love all numbers equally (I say this so that no number will feel slighted, then hunt me down and eat me with ketchup)

    6. “Bring it On” I do have an excuse. A flimsy one. But still. I’d heard a lot of pop culture references to it lately and I felt like I should see it so as not to be left out on all the jokes. I actually rather enjoyed it. (hides head in shame)

    5. Four. It’s the nicest number.
(People will think this is psychotic, but I think of some numbers as “nice” numbers, and some as “mean” numbers. I’ve had this particular uh, psychosis, since childhood. I blame Sesame Street. 2, 4, and 6 are nice numbers. 5, 7, 8 and 9 are mean numbers. 1 and 3 can be good or evil, depending on the number they are paired with. I don’t know. I finally told my husband about this last month hoping it wasn’t just me – he thought I was nuts.)

My favorite things to eat that are good for me: yogurt with fresh fruit, and oatmeal with milk and maple syrup. I also love grapefruit juice.

My favorite things to eat that are not good for me: pastries and pie.

I also love cold pizza for breakfast.

    4. Are you right or left-handed?

    Right.

    5. What’s your favorite number?

My favorite numbers were 5 and 6 when I was a child, but I don’t really have a favorite number anymore.

    6. What was the last movie you saw?

    In the theater: Pan’s Labyrinth
    On DVD: The Illusionist

    7. If you had the chance to visit any place in the world, where would you go?

Europe or Japan. Then maybe New Zealand.

    8. What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?

I cycle through favorite flavors, but my consistently favorite flavor is mint chocolate chip. Especially Breyer’s mint chocolate chip.

    9. Which Star Wars character is your favorite?

Hmmmm… maybe Leia or R2D2. Though I like Obi-Wan too.

  43. 1. I use a desktop at work and a laptop at home.
    2. I try to go to bed by midnight each night. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn’t.
    3. I almost always eat cereal, my favorite being crispix or honey bunches of oats.
    4. Right-handed
    5. My favorite number is 4, because it is my birth month and I only like even numbers, and it’s just a nice number.
    6. I watched The Firm last night. In theaters, I saw half of The Holiday and it was so boring, we left in the middle.
    7. London, Paris, Sydney, Tokyo, Jerusalem– perhaps in that order.
    8. Almost any kind because I love ice cream more than anything. But probably Dryer’s Samoa Girl Scout Cookie ice cream. The thin mint is divine also. But if it’s not girl scout cookie season, then maybe chocolate therapy from Ben and Jerry’s or Bryer’s cookies ‘n’ cream.
    9. I don’t have a favorite, which makes my husband sad because he loves Star Wars. So I will think of the most recent character’s name I have heard while listening to my husband play Star Wars Battlefronts 2 on X-box, and that would be Boba Fet. Is that how you spell it? Hmmm… who is Count Duku? Is he good or bad? Because that’s a cool name.

  44. Lynette (#27)–Sure, send some nicely dressed, glowing-saber wielding representatives by to teach me how to make stuff float! But they may have to stand in line behind Molly Ringwald and whoever played Ferris Bueller, because my DH has decided I’m not properly assimilated into my own culture until I’ve seen some movie about skipping school and *The Breakfast Club.* Also, apparently, I am a freak for not having seen a movie involving the impersonation of a giant zit (prop: twinkie) and another with Tom Cruise in his underwear.

    I got me some homework!

  45. 1. Yes.
    2. We’re in bed at 10:30 but rarely lights out before 12.

    5. 2. (Eccl. 4:9-12)
    6. Dreamgirls. A nice relaxing, generally positive movie.
    7. Centre court, Wimbledon finals.
    8. Peach.
    9. This is a bit of a confession: I find that growly noise Chewbacca made incredibly sexy.

  46. Janet, 46,

The only part of Risky Business that is any good is the three minutes where Tom Cruise sings Old Time Rock and Roll in his skivvies. You can find it on youtube, along with about twenty other guys whose captions say something like “Well, here’s me singing Old Time R&R in my underwear. Yeah, I know I’m not Tom Cruise. BTW, I shot this with my webcam one night when I got bored.” It is tremendously funny, but not for the faint of heart.

And in regards to your comment # 9, This latest Amazing Grace really is a special movie. Beautifully filmed, well-acted, with an outstanding script and an unflinching morality to its message. I recommend it highly, and I don’t think you should wait for Netflix. Get thee to a multiplex, stat!

    5. No favorite number, but a few weeks ago, in a conversation about birth weights, I commented that I could easily remember my son’s weight (7 lb, 14 oz) because it corresponded to Babe Ruth’s career home run total (714). (Ruth was a famous pitcher for the Red Sox. I understand he later became a minion of Satan.)

    6. I seldom watch movies. In the theater: Cars. At home: I don’t remember the name; it was about a couple of kids who had a bunch of money literally fall out of nowhere. Two minor characters were some inauthentic-seeming Mormon missionaries.

    7. where I haven’t been before? Australia.

    8. Vanilla (Mark IV, there’s no such thing as “plain vanilla.” You blaspheme the flavoring of the Gods.)

    9. Maybe Han Solo (He’s the scruffy-looking pilot, right?). I haven’t seen any of the new Star Wars movies (see #6 above).

  52. Left Field, the movie about the money coming out of nowhere is called Millions. And yes, the Mormon missionaries weren’t represented accurately.

  53. Millions, yes that was it.

Also, regarding #3, I should add that cereal doesn’t qualify as breakfast. It’s something I eat instead, when I don’t have time to cook an actual breakfast.
